I've only been breeding for about three years now but I have a huge
interest in the Marans. I only breed one variety, which is the Black
Copper Marans. It is a relatively new interest for me and I am learning in
leaps and bounds.
My first dozen eggs ran me $90.00 and only six chicks survived.
$30.00 a chick was a little steep in my opinion. I thought to myself that
if this was heart breaking for me, it must be for others. My first idea
was to breed and sell eggs. Good, large, dark and fertile eggs. Then
that started to change as I realized there is so much more to it than just eggs
and chicks.
Currently I am breeding two trios. I am also looking for a new
Cockerel that has a less colored chest. Most of the birds I've seen are
very mottled with color. I have been culling quite a few birds in the
effort to meet the French standard for this beautiful bird. My hens are
great, they lay nice dark large eggs. My one cockerel is good the other
too much color.
After quite a bit of research I've found that there are few
truly dedicated and passionate people breeding this bird. In
addition, there are VERY few on the west coast. I would like to be able to
meet the need for great quality stock on the west coast.
There are many small animal auctions in Northern California, of those I
have been to most. You can walk into any of them and pick up BCM chicks by
the boat load. I bought four just to see what I would get. Curiosity and experiment led me to try them. You can't even imagine what
I got. Needless to say, I ended up getting rid of all of them. One
cockerel was actually black, with green and grey wing color. The strangest
looking bird.
So, I guess what I'm saying is, on the West Coast we are truly in need of a
reputable source for this magnificent bird. I would like to think that I
will be able to fill that need in the not too distant future.
We at MOAC are proud of our members. This whole process is just for them. They have made it possible. We will list their names here and if you as a MOAC member, if do not want your name published just let us know when you join. Memberships also place you on the newsletter email list automatically.
